A gingerbread house-making event in Fort Liard, N.W.T., served as a chance for the community to gather during the dark winter months.

"Holidays can be really hard for some people as we don't know what they're going on in their daily lives. It could be somebody's first Christmas without a loved one. I know I am going through that and I miss my auntie very dearly," said Holly Fantasque, Fort Liard's recreation manager-in-training.

Fantasque helped organize the event, which took place on Dec. 5, alongside the healthy families programmer for Fort Liard.

"I helped out with her, it was a huge event, we had over 50 people and ran out of our gingerbread boxes," she said.

"Overall I think it was really great. It was the first time I seen that many people come out for an event to come and socialize. I think it was really great for them as well as we don't get that too often anymore."

Fantasque said especially since it's colder outside, there's fewer chances to gather. She said she hopes to help organize the event again next year.
