Winnipeg greenspace advocates pan plan to sell golf courses

Mayoral candidate Gord Steeves' plan to sell four municipal golf courses to bring in $100 million for infrastructure renewal will have a negative impact on Winnipeg's greenspace, says an advocacy group in the city.

Members from Outdoor Urban Recreation Spaces Winnipeg (OURS), a group that advocates forgreenspacesin the city, saidthe plan doesnt square with whatWinnipeggerswant.

Mazursaid over 8,000Winnipeggerssigned a petition to save Winnipeg's green spaces.

"The golf courses and the parks are absolutely precious jewels, said RonMazurwith OURS. Any suggestion to sell them for commercial or residential development may raise some tax revenue, but it diminishes our city. It makes us a lot smaller city."

GordSteeveshas said the golf course land would be redeveloped into green space and homes.
