2nd inmate dies at Drumheller Institution in span of 3 days

An inmate at the Drumheller Institution has died the second in-custody death at the southern Alberta federal prison in the span of three days.

An inmate at the Drumheller Institution has died the second in-custody death at the southern Alberta federal prison in the span of three days.

Paramedics were called to the facility 130 kilometres northeast of Calgary at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday for an adult male in medical distress.

Brandon Lee Mirva, 25, was declared dead at the medium-security prison, which also has a minimum-security annex.

Mirva was serving a two-year sentence for drug trafficking and possession for the purpose of trafficking, Correctional Service Canada said in a release.

The cause of death is under investigation.

Overdose suspected in death 3 days earlier

On Feb. 17, Drumheller Institution inmate AnatolyEichman, 29, died.

Eichman was serving a sentence of two years, five months and 21 days for charges of possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition.He had been at the prison since June 2017.

The man's father, Gnther Eichman, told CBC News that he was told by RCMP his son died from a drug overdose.

Eichman said Correctional ServiceCanada needs to do more to stop the flow of narcotics into prisons.

In December, correctional officers seized fentanyl and steroid capsules, among other contraband, worth an estimated institutional value of$30,885 from an inmate at the prison.

There were reports of multiple overdoses at the institution last year.
