A Calgary man accused of murdering his 25-year-old wife is in hospital, where he is expected to remain for several months, a judge heard Thursday.

Manpreet Kaur, 25, was killed in her northeast home on April 21.

Her husband, Maninderpreet Singh, 22, is charged with second-degree murder.

On the morning of April 21, police were called to a home in the 100 block of Redstone Common N.E. for reports of a woman in medical distress.

Despite first responders' efforts to save her, Kaur died in her home.

Singh was taken into custody at the house but released within 24 hours without charges being laid.

Surgeries planned

In between the homicide and when police laid the domestic murder charge, Singh suffered severe injuries.

In a brief court appearance Thursday before Justice Susan Pepper, defence lawyer Nav Saini told the court his client is in hospital, where he is expected to remain "for several months more."

He has several surgeries scheduled, including one as early as Friday, Saini told the court.

In light of Singh's medical issues, the case has been put over for a month.
